Lisa Adams on gmail Plays the PayPal Scam

Here's a typical  string of interchanges between a scammer and an intended victim, in this case from Lisa Adams.

Lisa the Scammer responds to Ad:

Is your listed advert still available for sale on craiglist...please get back to me on my email lisaadams20002000@gmail.com with your asking price
Lisa.
Craigslist Reader Responds to Lisa
Hello,
Yes the Sofa is still up for sale. my asking price is $899 which is as low of a loss as I could go. I paid original price for this set and it is in perfect condition so i think 59% off is fair from $1500
Please let me know if you have any other questions or would like to take a look at them if your near the area.
Best regards,
Scammer responds:
I am happy to hear from you and i will like to let you know that i have gone through the advert and am very pleased with it and i am ready to buy it at the listed amount but i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want it and i am ready to buy it.I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for it and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it up after i have made the payments,So kindly send me your full home address so that i can have it forwarded to the agent who is coming for the pick-up and inspection and am ready to make payment for it immediately you e-mail me back with the information requested for...i look forward to your fast response..

Thanks
Reader responds to scammer
Hello,
I am happy you like to sofa set. my paypal account is registered under : *******@gmail.com
please send : $899
please also let me know which date they may pick it up so we could setup an appointment .
Again thank you,

Scammer responds
I am just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come and pick up the item unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in Minnesota and all commission payments made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in Minnesota and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring along, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the $320.00 USD they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal. After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by paypal, i will need you to help me send the $320.00 USD to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at www.westernunion.com .I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done..

Reader responds to scammer:
I would be happy to help, as long as i am not paying any fees. Before transferring the shipping amount $320 to your agent it needs to clear to my bank account because im not sure if western union is partnered with paypal. Then i could send the money through western union from my account. With that said it is prob going to take a day or two to clear
let me know if this works.
Then reader includes this note to me:

***Then i researched and found your site!!** Thank you!!!

doubt I'm gonna purchase it. Therefore I want you to consider it sold
by withdrawing the advert from craigslist. Note that you will be
responsible for shipping and handling.i want to by this item for my
cousin schooling abroad and i'm going to add $100 which is the cost of
the shipping and also the payment will be made through paypal because

I've just received a VERY similar email even to the point of them being a marine engineer... It just didn't feel right so I googled PayPal scams and found your website. Thank you!

The new "Lisa" is "Lisa Jones" at sjilizie2@gmail.com. Same type of thing. Will buy it site unseen, am happy with the condition (really? from my crappy picture?). She works for UNICEF right now out of the country helping children with Malaria and she would have loved to have called, but their satelite was down, so please send me your paypal information. Uh no! I will be reporting her to Craigslist as well.

Glad I found these posts! When Craigslist responses sound too good to be true, they usually are. Thought I'd add another scammer identity to the warnings. Here's an exchange I had with a Peter Adams (with two e-mail addresses: peter.adams960@gmail.com and padams145@gmail.com) that sounds very much like these scams:

My name is Peter Adams, I'm interested, and consider it sold, I'm buying it for my father and payment would be through PayPal, my agent will come for pick up, actually I'm working in a ship and most time I am off shore. Expecting your prompt reply, with the name and email address on the your PayPal account so that I can make the payment and please provide me with recent pictures including this item so I can see the condition before we proceed since I would not be seen it in person so I can make a payment right away, and pick up would at your residence. And lastly, I'm offering additional $100 to your final price for you to keep it off from other offer. If you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.com and get it set up.. looking forward to your response.
Regards.
Peter.

Buyers, beware! Hope this keeps others from getting scammed.

So after doing some research and realizing it is a scam, I responded with this...

Peter,

Great! That's exciting! I will absolutely reserve it for you. One thing though. I want to disclose everything about the car to you before you buy it because I believe in being 100% forthright in these kind of situations, especially since you're not going to be able to actually see it for yourself. The car does have a rather large stain on the back seat, about the size of a men's basketball. The stain comes from chocolate milk that was spilled by my little cousin, Sara, and despite having the car detailed, we just weren't able to get it out. Also, an unfortunate consequence of the chocolate milk spill is that the car has a distinct oder. It's not so bad that you would say, "Why does this car smell like chocolate milk?" but it is unique enough that if someone were to ask you if you thought the car smelled like chocolate milk, you would probably put two and two together and recognize the smell as chocolate milk. Other than that, the car runs great. I hope this doesn't spoil the deal, like that chocolate milk spoiled in the back seat.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Mike

Thank you so much for this website. As I never posted anything on Cragslist before, I thought it would be easy and safe. I am trying to sell my car and I got an email from bensteve69123@att.net, telling me he was a marine engineer and wanted to buy my car sight unseen and insisted I set up a Pay Pal account. I thought that it was strange so I began a little digging... Thank you for your blog! It saved me a lot of money!

It started out like this. Email from "Karen Scott" karensc14@gmail.com

What's it present condition and reason for selling it? I want to purchase.

Both of these were in the description, but people ask stupid, redundant questions all of the time, so that really wasn't a red flag.

The next email looked like this:
Thanks for your response,am okay with the price and the condition,am
buying it for my vacation, because i'll be coming soon from our rig as
am a petroleum project engineer on a rig offshore,i won't be able to
come for the inspection due to the nature of my work,i would have love
to call in person but we have call restriction and visiting of website
are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send
you an email regarding it,i can only pay through PayPal as i don't
have access to my bank account online and i don't have online
banking, but i have my bank account attached to my pay pal account and
this is why i insisted on paying you through paypal,So pls kindly
get back to me with your paypal details, your full name and cell
phone number,so i can proceed with the payment and after the
payment has been done,i will contact my pick up agent that will come
around to move it at your location,In case you don't have a PayPal
account kindly sign up on www.paypal.com .i will like to see recent
picture of it, what is your final price and will have my agent sign
all the necessary papers for me.
Await your reply.

So I googled craigslist paypal and found this. Thanks

I got an email from an ad I posted on craigslist for a car I was trying to sell. As pointed out the email mentioned "the item" and not the actual name of the car. this of course sent off warning bells. So to did the bad english.

By the end of the ad I was completely sure it was a scam. Well in my ad I had only posted the front of the vehicle, so when I sent the request images I may have edited them slightly. So I was rather amused when the supposed guy overseas student was still interesting in buying a vehicle with Girl Power painted on the back with a brilliant heart and several flowers.

I'll still use craigslist for small stuff but I now use other sites like Rockys A List for big ticket items. Its worth paying a couple of cents a day to post an ad if I don't have to deal with all the crap.

ecc said...

and yet another similar scam, this time from "Lisa James". See email response to high ticket item posted on craig's list. Note the buyer did not ask questions about the item, or ask to see it. Email from Lisa James002@yahoo.com:

Sounds Good,I am ready to purchase it asap. I anticipate that I'll
have a Certified Check issued out to you from my bank. I'm in no rush
with you till fund's are cleared in your bank which takes only a day.
You do not have to bother yourself about the pick up. I'll instruct a
Shipping Co Agent to come for pick up at your door, when you must have
gotten your cash at hand. Kindly e-mail me back with your physical
address such as Name,Address (NOT P.o.box) City,State, Zip-code, Phone
Number.I will be sending the payment via Overnight FedEx Express Mail
Delivery .You can proceed to take off the ad on craigslist because I
don't want any other interruption by another buyer, so get back to me
with your full name and address with your phone number to mail out the
check to you

I just had a similar experience with one of the "marine engineers" listed above. The key here is to take control where the asshole used to have control. I wrote the following reply....

Hi .

This is a very interesting offer; to pay more than asking price. If that's what you really want to do, then I won't argue with you. However, please forward your shipper's contact information so I can start working on the logistics of shipping the unit to you. When I am satisfied that the shipping can be completed without undue duties, taxes, and commissions, I will complete the transaction with you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Juan T Mendez has not stopped!

I received a reply to my add for car parts on December 27, 2012, that is word for word exactly the same, as the previous post of Jim (selling the rug)on December 18, 2012.
I did not receive a certified check. I did receive a check, on January 3, 2013, from Wawa Inc in Pennsylvania by Fedex in the amount of $2250 for an item that I was selling for $500. The Fedex package was mailed from Massachusetts with a shipping address of a company in Dallas, Texas. Juan wanted me to forward the balance, by Western Union, to a person in Alabama at an address of a new car dealer. The car dealership has stated that they have no knowledge of this person to whom I am to send the check. I informed Juan that I will not do anything until the check clears and I asked for his phone number, so we could talk about this transaction. He answered me, by email, on January 5, 2013, that the check has cleared my bank and that I should send the funds to the bogus person in Alabama.

I'm sure there's so many others out there. They need to post a directory of known scammers on Craig's List. I feel sorry for the trusting and naive people who fall for their lines and lose money and possibly their identity! Seller beware....if it sounds too good to be true, it ISN'T!

Here are two "phishers": Renee Chester--email addresses used: recheall904 and rechel9988--both are gmail.com. The next one is: Michellevtv@gmail.com and she told me to respond to: Kimberlypyn@gmail.com. I have now been targeted twice for an item I had for sale for $700. I almost went for it the first time, I was naive. When they asked for everything up front I told them I would not sell the item until I met them and they saw the item for sale. Told them to call me--no response. At that point I knew I had been "phished". I then did a google search for the name/gmail address and Renee Chester comes up big time as a Craiglist scammer. Be on the lookout.

I just posted a washer and dryer and had the same thing happen. Look out for Renee Chester!

I have sent out the payment now and i am sure you must have received the payment notification from PayPal as regards the payment. The pick up company wanted $300 for the pick up and delivery, so i have included it in the payment i made. I have also informed the pick up company, I'm sure they will contact you regard the details you will use to send the money. Please make sure you send the money to them on time and arrange pick up time and date. Thanks and hope to hear from you ASAP
