Honda Accord Sold by Sgt. McBride Looks to Be a Scam

You know, I'd really hate to make a mistake and post a note alerting readers to a scam that turns out to be legit, but when you see as many scames over the years, you tend to see lots of similarities between notes. Note the email address for example. Would some named Alexander really butcher up their name like this: "a-l-x-e-r-i-d-e"? Note also the list of features about the car, which has been the same for several other car scams, then note the use of PhotoBucket for the photos. All are tell-tale signs that this, in all likelihood, is a scam. But I encourage readers to make their own decisions.

so phony! emailed him and just got this email back. you are crazy old man if you think i'm going to send you 2500 bucks! LMAO
Right now I'm in a military base of Alabama National Guard. Due to military security reasons I'm restricted from leaving the unit's facility under any purpose and have strictly limited phone access. I hope you can understand that we will have to stick to email for now. The vehicle is here with me at the base but I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the base. DAS will also handle the title transfer for an extra $75.00. I think the car will be in 3-5 days to your address. As I said in my first email will take care of shipping charges. I will send all necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, user’s manual, pink slip etc). Regarding the payment I want to use eBay protection program. You'll get 5 days to inspect and test drive after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. Once you inspect and decide to keep the car, will confirm your decision with eBay and only then they will re-route me the money. In this way we are both protected.
I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. I have to fill out a form on eBay and I need the name that will go on the title and an address where you want the car delivered. Once I do it, eBay will email you all the details on this transaction and we can get the ball rolling

wouldnt that be a federal offense? impersonating a military man

I had the same response when actually trying to sell something legit on Craigslist. They did not respond back when I told them that my husband and I had extremely high security clearance with the military and could fly in and out of any base in the US. I guess they did not have an English pretyped message for a response to that. I just had 2 scammers email me back on an item I just put on Craigslist...

I've had this guy try to scam me on craigslist (cincinnati, oh) also.

Under the email alxeride@gmail.com and I believe another one under trevorsinclair4@gmail.com both for about a $2000+ honda Civic (one was an EX, another a coupe) and both were very underpriced with a military excuse to quickly sell.

Again- Sgt Alexander Mcbride. He tried using Ebay "buyer protection" w/ 5 days to look at car before money is sent to him...This is a common scam so be careful. if it looks too good to be true...it probably is.

lol - was reading some posts above, the same word for word "DAS" shipment method only for me it was a Tennessee military base.

I reported them via the FBI fraud online system, I hope this person/people are caught and justice is served!

I want to be honest with you, the car is in perfect condition and runs great has 56,000 miles, automatic transmission with 3.0L 6 cyl. engine. There's no damage, no scratches, this car was never involved in an accident, never been wrecked and is in the same shape as the pictures show. The title is clean with no lien against it.
I have dropped my price to $2,422 since this is an Urgent Sale! I need to sell it before March 28th when I will be deployed to Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home and I won't let it go to waste in my backyard, therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer.
Please tell me what other information would you be interested in and I will try and provide it to you.

I'm currently involved in a military program, temporarily based in Tennessee Army National Guard. Due to military security reasons I'm restricted from leaving the unit's facility under any purpose and have strictly limited phone access. I hope you can understand that we will have to stick to email for now. The car is here with me in the base. I thought you might want to see it, so I've asked them to allow viewers to inspect the car, but their reply was: "We are not a showroom! That's why, I've taken the liberty to prearrange things and the only way that I can sell it is with a shipping company help. I chose DAS to do that and I’ve already made all the arrangements with them to pick up the car from the base. The shipping won't be a problem because military has a considerable discount, so I can handle it by myself, with no charges whatsoever on your account. DAS will also handle the title transfer. I think the car will be in 3-5 days to your address. The car will be sent along with all its documents including title, bill of sale, 2 sets of keys, full service records and everything else you'll need.
Regarding the payment I want to use eBay protection program because I'm eBay member since October 2007.
Please send me an email with the name that will go on the title and an address where you want the car delivered. I will send to eBay the transaction mentioning the car details, the price etc. After the transaction is processed, they will contact you.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Nathan

Auto Scams on Craigslist & other sites

eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) covers only certain vehicle transactions that are completed ON eBay.com. If a Craigslist seller "promises" you eBay protection programs, walk away. It is fraudulent. Only cars bought and sold on eBayMotors.com can legitimately offer up to $50,000 in vehicle protection.

Common warning signs:

Sellers who want to move the transaction from one platform to another (for example, from Craigslist to eBay Motors).
Sellers who claim that eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection covers an auto transaction conducted outside the eBay site.
Sellers who push for speedy completion of the transaction and request payments via quick wire transfer payment systems. See example.
Sellers who refuse to meet in person, or refuse to allow the buyer to physically inspect the vehicle before the purchase. See example.
Transactions in which the seller and vehicle are in different locations. Criminals often claim to have been transferred for work reasons, deployed by the military, or moved because of a family circumstance, and could not take the vehicle with them.
Vehicles advertised at well below their market value. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

I suspect a different scam is running - same set-up but with different seller and product (grossly under-priced piano instead of car). See the below e-mail my wife received in response to her inquiry about the alleged piano. I would be curious about others who have seen too-good-to-be-true Craigslist postings for pianos and such (that happen to be in other cities and are being sold well under market price because of the death of a child - a likely story, indeed, and one designed to tug at your heart strings :-). FYI, we're in the Nashville area and saw the ad on the local Craigslist.

Hello again,

Please let me explain to you the process of this transaction and you can decide if you want to proceed or not.
As I told you in my first email, I recently lose my son. I also got a new job and moved to Omaha Nebraska in order to start over. I'm in Omaha Nebraska but my presence won't be necessary because I prearranged the deal with Amazon. The instrument is in Omaha at the shipping company, ready to be delivered. The deal includes free delivery and it will arrive at your address in 2-3 days. You will have 3 days to test it and inspect the piano prior to making any purchase and if by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back at my expense. If you want to make this deal I need the following details from you: full name, address, and phone#.
Once I have your info I will forward them to Amazon to get things started. Amazon will contact you shortly after they have the details with all the information that you need to complete this deal and you will also have proof that I am covered by them and a legitimate seller. Waiting for your email with the requested details.

Here was my response to him:
I really hate to say this but this is the second one that has responded to me regarding them being deployed to Afghanistan in two weeks and not going to let the care waste in my backyard. My concern is that I have family and friends that are in the military and it saddens me to think that honest military men are attempting to scam honest people. I only deal with people in person. I am sorry if it appears that I am being rude, but this screams scam all over it. If you are trying to scam people and you are in the military then shame on you.

Let me know any other details you need about it

Hi there,

The Wrangler it is in perfect condition, there's not a scratch or any dents on it. Everything from engine to tires is mint condition. I have a clear title with no liens or loans. I'm selling it so low due the fact that my medical team will deploy back to Afghanistan on November 15th for a 1 year contract and I won't let it go to waste in my backyard, therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer. If you are interested email me back.

Hey I saw this deal on craigslist today and sent an E-mail. And lo and behold, who should write me back but none other than (alxeride@gmail.com). The ad says he's in Orlando, florida and I just happen to live in Kissimmee, florida. which is practically in the same county. this is the email I got from him: My name is Alexandra, and I'm emailing you about the 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport I have for sale. The vehicle is in perfect condition, with no need for any additional repairs, flawless condition, no dents and no mechanical problems. It has never been involved in any accidents. It has 107,330 miles, automatic transmission, with an 8 Cylinder 4.7 Liter engine and all the extras included. This is my personal vehicle, title in my name/hand and there are no liens or loans on it. The price was reduced at $1,969 (including shipping and handling costs) because I'm in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell the car this month before the 26th, when I will be leaving with my medical team back to Afghanistan. There's no use on keeping it.
If you have any other questions, or need more info, please feel free to ask. Here is some pics: http://www.use.com/ba219fafa190ab13cb64
I look forward hearing from you.

Not only that but the email came at 1:30 in the morning and I just happened to be up so I emailed him right back and told him I was in Kissimmee and wanted to come see the truck with my dad and gave a phone# and told him it would be a cash transaction paid in full. Then I googled the email address and thanks to you all I've been duly informed. It's 2 am and he still has not responded to my email reply. I'll bet he doesn't even contact me back. (coward scammer)

Same comment as above from Nathan Ronning, for the 2003 Ford Escape. Ha, there's no medical staff unit in Nevada's 17th Brigade!

Here's a response from a current one at Redding, California's Craiglist. I had sent an email to an ad that said, "URGENT." The person listed on Craigslist was sandyw@blumail.org, but the response came from someone named Susan Davis. Here is what it said:

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my car. The car is a 2002 Honda Accord with 112,152, in great shape, no problems, damages or hidden defects. It was always garaged. Because of my divorce settlement, i own this car and as a woman without driver`s license i don`t need it so i`m trying to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Please read bellow all the information about the car: ( I got all the info from the owners manual )

Model : Accord
Mileage: 112,152
Body Style: Sedan
Exterior Color: White
Interior Color: Tan

Transmission: 4-Speed Automatic
Drivetrain: FWD
Doors: 4
Wheelbase: 107"

I will wait your e-mail if you are still interested.
Thank you

After responding to this, here is what they sent me back:

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. The car is now at the shipping company warehouse sealed in a cargo container ready to ship. I want to use eBay's services for this transaction as it is the safest for both of us.Let me explain how it works:
First of all I will need your full name and shipping address so I can register the transaction with eBay. Once you receive the details from eBay, the car will be reserved for you until you read the details and decide if you want to proceed or not.You will have a 5 days inspection period, after the car arrives at your address to make sure it is as shown in the photos and in good working order. If by any reason the car is not as described or if you find any problems with it, I will arrange to ship it back on my cost. The payment will be sent to eBay and they will hold it until the inspection period is over and you decide if you're going to buy it or not. This way you're not going to pay for something you haven't seen and with the inspection period you can make sure it's as described. If you agree with this terms please reply with your full name and address so we can get the ball rolling.

Thank you

Same scam Finger Lakes NY only a 2003 Ford Escape and Sgt. Nathan Welch or Nathan Ronning. When something appears to be too good to be true, it usually is.
