We received an e-mail from the scammer through an apartment search website. This one goes by the name Dr. Kann Nicholas. I had kept all of his e-mails and some are word for word what others have posted. He not only disclosed odd personal details, but listed a social security number, and birth date for us to use for background checks. We told him that we did not have anything available. He kept emailing, we stopped responding, and then we received the check in the mail (which by the way looks just like the picture posted here). We called his “financial advisor in the United States” who it turns out is in Canada (which is also where the check was postmarked). Her information is Malina Carrvan at Channel Sea Investments, 519-731-2532, mcarrvan-channelsea@hotmail.com. She was very odd and demanding and finally said “I don’t know, I’m just the accountant”. I had tried searching their names online, but without success. Finally, I searched his address and this blog popped up. I just wanted to add to the information out there so this can stop.
I also just received an email from Prof Brent Giblin. What a surprise, he wants to rent my place too! Sight unseen and will pay the deposit and 1st months rent upfront and then full year's rent when he gets here. All I have to do is accept his phony check and pay his furniture company for the delivery of his furniture (with funds from my account once his check bounces...) Is there anything we can do to shut this scam artist down??
I filed a police report with my local police department and sent them all of the e-mails that I had recieved. The police department told me that they would keep it on file but with internet scams there really isn't much they can do becuase it is outside the U.S. I would suggest that you also file a police report at the least.

I received the *identical* email text from collug01@aol.com, in response to a posting I made for antique furniture. You gotta admire this guy, he's certainly prolific. Isn't there any law enforcement agency that has the appropriate jurisdiction to investigate and intercept these scumbags?
I have been contacted by Prof. Brent Giblin. The only reason I did a Google was b/c he put two different dates in the text, both of which have passed. Also been conctacted by g.minton@hotmail. Seems to be the same story. Crazy! I guess you can't trust anyone.
October 9, 2008. I recieved the same exact email correspondance as Charity today from Brent Giblin.
Thanks for creating this blog to make me aware of this scam. After replying to his first email (before I knew of the scam), I asked him specific questions. His second response answered none of my questions.
I got a message identical to the one pb reportd -- word for word, except the name ("Robert Tedrow") was different. I don't know why I was suspicious -- maybe because the language of the email was oh, so reminiscent of Nigerian scammers. Anyway, thanks for this blog post -- it saved me some grief.
Below is another example of the SAME SCAM, including much of the same text as others got, that I received October 17-20, 2008.

I just got (Nov. 7) the same scam targeting rental apartments. There are some new variations, e.g. a new fake employer name. DON'T GIVE THESE FOLKS YOUR PHONE NUMBERS. First time I got this scam, they called me several times, middle of the night. full text is below.

i recieved a check from PAUL JAMES... in the amount of $29,500...enclosed with the check was information to an attorney to help me in paying my taxes... my friend who works at a bank said that it was probably real, beings is that i play publishers clearing house and all sorts of things like that.. plus a letter from an attorney! so i called the number and the lady, MALINA CARRVAN said that i had won and \asked what game i had played, i said publishers clearing house and she said congrats fom behalf of there attorneys offices... i cashed the check.. my bank put a hold on it and it came back counterfit...... i am now out the $30 returned check fee, plus all the heartache that scam cause!!! please be careful!!!!

Hi Everyone- Yes-BEWARE! Brent Giblin from the UK is a major scammer!!! I posted an ad for rent on Craigslist around March 20th, 2009. Brent immediately contacted me with two emails..here is the 2nd one he sent after I responded to the first one. So glad I checked on Google to see if he was a scammer. All sounded too good to be true and weird nuiances.
"Many thanks to your prompt response and brief details on this unit.I
am indeed a potential tenant and serious about renting this unit. As a
Bristish Fossils hunter, Having discovered lots of Dinasaurs fossil
such as Dinosaurs Megalosaurus,Oviraptor,Pinacosaurus,

to state to Trade those fossils with some US Museums.
In view of my work schedule, i would want us to finalise basic

wanting to send me a certified check:

I would really have loved to come for the viewing of the item but

saw a post on Craigslist which reminded me of a scam I fell victim to last month, in which a person sent me a bogus check for housekeeping services, the check was put on hold by my bank, but mistakes were made & checks bounced, etc. causing all kinds of trouble... anyhow, this one I saw reminded me of that, and I emailed the guy and said his ad looked like a scam. Can't stand these cheats, and I want everyone to know about them so they can avoid being hurt...He sent me back this email:

He pointed out that Lucas Taylor (see one of his masterpieces at end of this loooong string of scam emails) should be able to cut a check to me rather than sending me a larger check to cash and forward remaining funds to a third party. As regards the lease agreement,i will eventually have it filled and signed on my arrival in your place as I am of the opinion that such documents are best filled and signed physically. I can start the lease by the 20th Mar 2010 and i will be doing a one year lease. You can prepare the lease in my name Dr Bette Brower. Let me know how to move ahead as i intend to complete this deal before i move in soon, I will let you know the exact date as soon as I get a booking on a flight to the states.

Thanks for your prompt response,brief details on this unit and for wanting me to be your potential tenant,i currently staying at No.5 London Street London W2 1HL which will not allow me see the place not until my arrival to the state after i have secured the place but am well satisfied with the little details that you gave,i will be glad if you can let me have the pictural view of the place only if available.I will be in the states for the next one year with my wife,with my 7yrs old daughter who will continue her studying in USA.I am self employed and will be doing a private research work Trading dinosaur fossil with Some USA Museums and Research.I will be doing a one year leasing with the option of extending it but that will greatly depend on you.Am willing to pay you upfront of 1 month rent + the security deposit and utilities if any to secure this unit prior to my arrival to state,i'll pay for the 11 months fees in Cash as soon as i arrived to state.
