WOW!!I almost fell for the exact same scam. However, some of the things did not make sense, so I went online and did some research on this -Thomas Lowen 80 New Bridge Bergenfield, NJ and BAM!! I come across this scam. I posted an ad on Craig's list and immidiately got a respond from a Michael Adams who insisted on rushing me a cashier's check, but said that he had just gotten married but he would have his secretary send a cashier's check. 3 days later a receive a check for $3,500.00 and an email stating that his secretary had made a mistake, but to cash the check, and deduct the $200 original dollars for the furniture and he would also throw in an extra $50 for reserving the furniture, and an extra $100 for my troubles so long as I would cash the check ansd send back the remaining balance. ALMOST FELL FOR IT!! Some advice, ALWAYS DO A LITTLE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU CASH A CHECK THAT IS OVER THE ORIGINAL AMOUNT. Thank you so much for posting this and I hope there are no other other people out there that have fallen for this scam!

Mr John Hargreaves is a good credit worthy fellow and pays up rent on time and at the end of his stay He was refunded his deposit since there was no damage on the building unlike other tenants i had in recent years.
I never had any problem in terms of payment in recent years .My house rent is 1750 pounds equivalent to $3500 monthly,and yet he affords this consistently .Mr Hargreaves is prompt, courteous and pleasant to deal with.

This is the newest scam that he is trying to hire a security officer for his wife and pretends to send me a security deposit to book my services but then he wants me to send the rest of the money to a fake agent to supposebly book his wife’s hotel, expenses and accommodation. He sent me the check, but I had a strong suspicion and decided not to cash it. I proceeded to tell him that I had deposited the check and I was waiting for the check cleared which was not true. He then e-mail me back a few days later saying that the check had been deducted and cleared from his account which was impossible, because I never cashed the check. Here are the e-mails I received from this son of a bitch.
I also notified the proper authorities about this attempt of fraud and I will keep taps on this situation. I work very closely with the local police enforcement and I will do everything in my power to take this guy down.

"Craigslist rental scam Gideon Cole, Shamik Spann, and Joseph William are involved with forged checks" I received a forged check for $6500 from Gideon Cole who claimed to be a United Kingdom researcher relocating to the United States and he wanted me to send the balance less rent deposits to his decorator, Shamik Spann, in Columbus, S.C. by Western Union. I called the company on the check, Jedec, and they said this is the third landlord who received a forged check issued on their account from Gideon Cole. I wanted him to waste the $23 postage and get the check for evidence. Beware of these three Craigslist scammers-Gideon Cole, Shamik Spann and Joseph William.
Please scan the check and post an image of it. These "trophies" are great for others reference.
I cannot as the bank account number was genuine for the company check that Gideon Cole forged the signature on. By the way, the forged check express mail return address sender was from a "Eve Granick"

I checked his reference who wrote a an email saying he was sorry Richard was leaving the apartment and that "It is good to speak with an American"!
Yeah...good to speak with an American cause they know we have the cash they so desperately need to steal from us!
On a side note, It's gotta suck having to live in such poor conditions on a continent such as Africa (where the scammers are located) that your only hope at making a decent living is stealing from others.

Scammer changes name to richy williams. I received this e-mail on 9/11/2009 with regard to my apartment to rent in Stratford, Connecticut. Whenever I get this format I go online to check the company name & spam to see who has reported the scammer in the past.

My Mom almost got duped by, this time the name is HOWARD ADAMS and linking to a website owned by a Howard Adams. The scammer says they are giving you a job with a rental company in your city and if you buy some home office equipment with a check you can work from home for him. Its pretty messed up to steal someones identity as well as make them think they have a job then steal from them...

Just got the same e-mail this morning for an apartment I posted for rent on Craigslist IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS. What tipped me off it was a scam is that he kept referring to the location of the apartment as "The States". I guess he's trying to steal people's identity because he keeps asking for my Name, Number and Address.

Hi there. I have received the same stream of inquiries and no better than to believe something like this. My question is, should I contact anyone to report this and if so, Who? I have no problem stringing these people along. Any advice would be great.

Here is another scammer that fails to mention the item they are inquiring about in their opening email. They always come off sounding like the person knows little english. Don't fall for it!
I filed complain 26531397 with the FTC for this. Current name / e-mail is: sintia smith sintiasmith150@gmail.com. I haven't gotten past their relocation need more details e-mail.
